JODC International Activities

JODC has supported a number of international data exchange activities for success of its mission. Participating in these activities, oceanographic data and information will be further promoted worldwide. JODC has served as a Japanese focal point for data exchange activities conducted under the framework of International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC).

JODC has organized training courses on oceanographic data management since 1982 to support the activities of IOC Regional Committee for the Western Pacific (WESTPAC), aiming to improve the capability of personnel who are currently involved in oceanographic data and information management in Member States of the WESTPAC region on basic concepts of the IODE system and its function, and acquisition, process, and compilation of oceanographic data as Data Center.

International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE)

The IOC's International Oceanographic Data and Information Exchange (IODE) was established in 1961 to enhance marine research, exploitation and development by facilitating the exchange of oceanographic data and information among participating Member States and by meeting the needs of users for data and information products.

The IODE system forms a worldwide service oriented network consisting of DNAs (Designated National Agencies), NODCs (National Oceanographic Data Centers), and WDCs (World Data Centers - Oceanography). Over the past 50 years, IOC Member States have established over 80 oceanographic data centers in many countries.
This network has been able to collect, control the quality of, and archive millions of ocean observations, and makes these available to Member States.

The main objectives of the IODE programme are:
